William Clowry New York Obituary

Obituary
The REV. WILLIAM H. CLOWRY
The Rev. William H. Clowry, for 25 years Rector of St Gabriel’s Church in East 37th Street, died at rectory at an early hour yesterday morning. He been suffering for some time with rheumatism, and last Sunday his illness assumed a serious aspect, his kidneys becoming affected. Father Clowry was born in the County Carlow, Ireland. in 1822, and was educated at Carlow College, from which he went to the celebrated Seminary of the Irish clergy at Maynooth. He came to this country in 1850 and was for some years Professor of Moral Theology in the Seminary of the Diocese of Chicago. He removed to New-York with the Rev. John Breen and the Rev. James Kinsella in 1857, and was assistant to the Rev. Dr J. W. Cummings, at Stephen’s Church, in East 28th Street, till he began his labors in St. Gabriel’s parish, two years later, when he organised that congregation and erected the present church. The site for the edifice, which comprised eight lots, worth at least $25,000, was a gift from the late Dr Henry J Henderson, one of the TRustees of Coumbia College, a convert to the Catholic faith.
The Pastor’s first care was to erect houses for the parish. These were completed toward the close of 1859, and the first floor of the male school was blessed as a chapel. The present church was dedicated on Nov 12, 1865, by Archbishop McCloskey. Father Clowry’s zeal in preserving peace during the draft riots was highly praised, and he was always an unremitting and zealous priest in the general care of his parish. He had the direction of the Sisters of Mercy of this city for many years, having been appointed to that charge by Cardinal McCloskey. He was also selected by the Cardinal as a member of the Council of the diocese, and his advice was taken on all important matters. The funeral will be held to-morrow morning.

REV William Clowry – died 1829

THE REV. WILLIAM CLOWRY.
Father Clowry appears as one of the Superiors at Carlow College, in 1818. He was principally distinguished, and his services much sought after, as a preacher. He was one of the chief disputants in the memorable Biblical discussion which took place at Carlow in 1824. He became Administrator of the Mensal Parish of Tullow where he died in 1829. Dr.  Doyle wrote the inscription which appears there on his tornb ; the Bishop refers to him as one ” whose talents and virtues came forth with him from his mother s womb, and were cultivated by him with the most assiduous care. His zeal, his eloquence, and polemic writings placed his name, when he had only arrived at manhood, among the most distinguished in the Church of Ireland.” He died at the early age of 35.

Jeremiah Clowry 1941 Agriculture
Let me take the case of Jeremiah Clowry, of Craan, Milford. The disease was confirmed on his land on Wednesday, 23rd July, and his cattle were not slaughtered until Saturday, 26th July. Six of the cattle were infected on the Wednesday and by Saturday the bulk of the remaining cattle, 39 in all, were infected. This man was also convicted and fined. I suggest that the Minister should have been prosecuted in this case and convicted and imprisoned. Some of those men are ignorant country men, with little or no knowledge of what is happening. They have no wireless sets and perhaps the daily paper fails to [451] reach them. If they have been declared negligent in not notifying the disease for three or four days, how much more negligent are the Minister’s staff when they leave highly-infected animals at large for six or seven days?

Patrick Clowry 1832 / PATRICK M. CLOWRY.
The Superintendent of the Registry Department of the postoffice was born in Carlow, Ireland, December 26, 1832.

In 1850 his family came to Chicago, and he went to work at once for Satterly, Cook & Co., grocers, corner State and Lake streets. ‘ After three years he went to work for  J. H. Gray, in the same business. He then learned the harness trade, and followed it up to 1858, when he entered the post office. In 1863 he had climbed the ladder of promotion as high as the foreman-ship of the general delivery.

He was appointed the First Superintendent of Carriers by John L. Scripps, and held it for nine years. In 1873 Gen. McArthur made him Superintendent of the General Delivery. After two years he was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Carriers, and succeeded Mr. Hubbard as Superintendent in 1881. In October, 1882, he was appointed Superintendent of the Registry Department.
